FAQs

We recommend waiting until 7 years of age. The reason for this is that some young children develop at a different rate and it is important to rule out development immaturity or other issues (medical, etc) prior to diagnosing dyslexia.

Dyslexia cannot always be diagnosed in an assessment. However, all reports include a detailed examination of the individual’s strengths and weaknesses of a learner’s profile and include a section with a clear list of strategies, interventions, and suggested support.
Sometimes a referral is made for further assessment by a psychologist, occupational therapist, or GP.

Currently, I prefer to conduct assessments face-to-face as it allows me to build a better rapport with the young person and help them feel at ease. It also enables more accurate observation of non-verbal cues, which are crucial for understanding the student's needs and behaviours, and reduces potential distractions and technical issues by working in a quiet environment.
However, this preference may change in the future as assessment tools and technology advances. There are other Assessors who prefer to assess only online.

Dyslexia can have a substantial and long-term adverse effects on normal day to day activities, and is therefore a recognised disability under the Equality Act 2010.
The Act states that schools and higher education institutions have a duty to make 'reasonable adjustments' for disabled students (which can include students with learning difficulties, such as dyslexia) - British Dyslexia Association
In secondary school, for example these could be, extra time given, modified teaching methods, assistive technology. In primary school, these could include classroom adjustments and organisational support.

I understand that you want to be involved in your child's assessment process, and appreciate your support. However, it's essential for assessments to be conducted in an environment where the most accurate and unbiased results can be obtained.
I ask parents not to be present during an assessment for the following reasons:
Reducing Distractions: Your child's performance can be influenced by your presence, which might affect their ability to concentrate and respond naturally to the tasks.
Ensuring Comfort and Independence: Children often feel more comfortable and independent when working directly with an assessor. This can help them engage more fully with the tasks.
Unbiased Observations: It is crucial to observe your child’s natural behaviours and responses. Having parents in the room can unintentionally lead to prompts or cues that might influence the assessment outcomes.
When attending a session at the East Finchley Consulting Rooms, parents are invited to wait at the coffee shop opposite or during a home visit, I will require a quiet room with a desk where I can work with your child.
I am fully certified with an Enhanced DBS, full public liability and professional indemnity insurance.
